During the morning service for the last few weeks, we have been looking at depression, anxiety, and grief. All of these are things we will experience at some point in our lives, to varying degrees. You might have anxiety over going to the doctor or dentist. Grief after the loss of a loved one is normal. People often become depressed for a time after a relationship ends. All of these are normal reactions to circumstances in life.
God wants us to know that He loves us throughout all of life’s circumstances, the good and the bad! In several places the Bible says that God is with us always. No matter what we are going through, He is there for us. He knows how we are feeling and what we are thinking, and He wants us to turn towards Him so He can give us the comfort, strength and wisdom to face that tough situation we are going through.
During times of grief and/or depression, there is nothing wrong with seeking professional help. In fact, it can be the one of the ways that God leads you to begin the healing process. A Christian counselor or psychologist can help not only help you mentally, but also spiritually as well.
The most important thing though is to turn to God. Even if you aren’t feeling up to doing anything else, sit in a quiet, comfortable place and pray. Tell God how you are feeling, tell Him about your worries, your sadness and disappointment. Remember He cares for you! Any time that you can spend in prayer and reading the Bible can help immensely.
And remember “…He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” (Deuteronomy 31:8 NLT)
